Fishing

The real fun begins once the net hits the water.

Setting the net takes about 15-20 minutes (finding a good spot and setting the net down into the water) and then you've got about 60-90 minutes of "free time".

I spent most of my "free time" on the boat either cleaning, cooking, playing/"summer schooling" with Braeden, reading or sleeping. I tried to get as much sleep as I could (about 8 hours per day/night).

Playing Lego Ninjago with R&B

Shooting a shotgun for the first time. No holes in the boat, go me!

After the net sits for 60-90 minutes you reel it back in, and provided you've hit a good run of fish... you pick! "Picking the net" means you pull apart the net and pick out any fish that have entangled themselves. Ryan is lightning quick (20+ years of experience gives him an unfair advantage) but by the end of a few sets I had figured out how to be a help and no longer a hinderance.

King salmon!

B's "fishing suit" - he later purchased a water gun with his earnings, which he used to "clean the fish" on deck. Very helpful ;)

My strong Alaskan fisherboy *that's fish blood on his arm! He didn't cry or fuss about getting dirty. SO proud!

Net work

Net work is a necessary evil in the fishing industry.

When gillnetting for salmon, different sized mesh (net) is required - to catch different sizes of fish and by the Fish&Game to not catch certain sizes of fish.
There are various types of net work, and in order to have the correct net on the boat, repair holes/tears or to replace aged equipment a fisherman must do net work. Usually the crew helps because it is in their job description.
I help every season because I love network. Not.

It is not fun. It is not quick. It is not painless.

What I do like about net work is the chance to spend time with Ryan/the crew (if he has one).
We talk, listen to music, joke around, sometimes the weather cooperates and I get to work on my tan. But best of all? Ryan is always extra sweet to me when we work together (he knows I can say "F this network!" and walk away anytime I want).

While in Wrangell we had some net work to get done. Here is a photo-log to give you an idea:

The net is spread between two metal pole thingies * very technical terms in the fishing industry! Leadline (the lead-filled line that sinks the bottom of the net) on one end, and corkline (the corks are knotted to the top of the net - when in water it floats) on the other end.

Each of these corks (this repair was about 100 fathoms worth) is individually knotted onto the net.
First step: untie every.single.cork.
That's about 600 feet of cork.
Fun stuff!

While I untied the corkline, Ryan sewed the two pieces of net together - that white pointy thing in his hand is called a "needle", it is loaded with thin twine-like line.

After the net is sewn together, Ryan attaches the leadline to one end and we tie the corkline back onto the net.

Once both ends are attached the whole net (about 250 fathoms) can be reeled back onto the drum (the big metal wheel on the stern of the boat).

Lennie <3's net work!

Gillnetting

Some of you may not know my boyfriend is a commercial fisherman - to be more specific - a gilnetter.

Most gillnetters have a crew member to help them maximize the amount of fish caught during the "peak" of the season - more hands on deck means more fish picked out of the net - means more money. Cha ching!

Ryan usually has a crew just for the peak (July), but this season we planned to have me and B on the boat for the entire season.
Free crew for Ryan. Family time for all of us. A new adventure for me & B.
Alas, pans changed, so B and I were only on the boat for the month of June.

Ryan went to Wrangell in May to start the King Salmon season, so in order to join him, B and I had to travel. Normally I would prefer to take a flight, but Alaska Airlines smokes crack and was trying to charge us $400 for a 45 minute flight. Ha. Right.

I am not a big fan of the ferry, but because I refused to pay for AK Air was willing to compromise, we hopped on the Matanuska for a 12 hour sailing.
The last time I went on a ferry trip was 12 years ago for sports/choir.
When I travel, I mean business. I like to get to my destination as quickly and effortlessly as possible. Sitting around on a big boat, with lots of strangers and a child who doesn't handle unstructured time very well is not my "cup of travel tea".
To make things easier on all parties I booked a sailing from 7pm-8 am. AND a state room - the best $79 ever spent!

B and I slept for most of the sailing, woke up at 6 am for some cold cereal in the cafeteria and then watched the boat dock in Wrangell.

B walking down the ramp to the Matanuska

B quickly fell in love with Wrangell and even jumped on Ryan's "Lets move to Wrangell" bandwagon.

In Wrangell, good times with friends always involves a good party :)

R was so good about showing B how to prep the boat for a week of fishing. B had his own jobs/chores on the boat. Filling our water tank was job #1.

Stay tuned and you'll see what my jobs were...

Good intentions part deux

It is 7/11/2012 @2:20 pm.
I am sitting at my MacBook, staring at the screen.
There is not an ounce of motivation in me to write. Anything.
This entry is forced and might be pointless. Bear with me, I'm trying to get the "blog juices" flowing again :)

I mentioned it before, I have the best intentions to use this blog as an outlet for 'me', but life keeps getting in they way - darn it!

School (for B)/work (for me) ended June 1st. Since then our lives have been a crazy whirlwind of travel, commercial fishing, cooking/cleaning, playing, and homework. Rinse, lather, repeat.

To be fair, I didn't plan on having much free time this summer. Ryan and I planned on me being his crew member/fishing with him all season - taking distance courses, parenting/crewing/cooking on a fishing vessel doesn't leave much "free time"!
Welp, plans changed... which totally threw me for a loop. *Why is this so hard for me? Because I have an unstoppable compulsion to control everything. Duh.*

With this change of plans came infinite possible ways to waste spend my time for 2.5 months.

Here's to hoping I will actually blog about my time well spent ;)

We love you Miss Hannigan!

Today marks the two year anniversary of my Nana's death.

Today I was preoccupied with daily duties, a sick child and lots of chores/housework so I didn't really let myself feel my grief. I block a lot of feelings about my Nana passing, because if I didn't I would be an emotional wreck. Unhealthy I know, but it's how I get by.

My Nana was a truly inspiring woman. Strong, stubborn, creative, smart, loving, successful - the list could go on and on.

Some of my earliest memories involve my Nana and time spent at her house.
Around age 4 she taught me how to snap my fingers, blow bubble-gum bubbles, shop, model outfits and of most importance to me - SING!
A particular memory I have is singing the "Annie" soundtrack in their lower living room (where they entertained), loud enough to fill the whole house. Over. And over. And over.

Tonight, in honor of her I am watching Annie. I haven't seen this movie, nor have I heard the soundtrack in probably 15 years. I am amazed that I can recall all the lyrics effortlessly :)

I love and miss you Nana,

Your Songbird

Spring!

It is common knowledge I'm a klutz, my friends and family are always giving me a hard time because of the multitude of injuries I inflict on myself. Even my (almost!) 8 year old son is attuned to my being accident prone. He gives me a heads up about stairs and uneven ground, he worries I'll take a spill when we play outside, and to top that? The other day B said to me, "Mom, it's a good thing you wear safety glasses because you're really dangerous." They are just prescription glasses... thank you very much!

That being said, *knock on wood* I am so proud to say that I have been serious injury injury free for months. Sure there have been little mishaps here and there... but nothing too damaging or debilitating. To celebrate this feat of mine I have decided its time to take advantage of my injury free body and lead a more active lifestyle.

The weather in my neck of the woods has been seriously amazing (for this time of year). The sun has shone brightly for almost 3 weeks straight - unheard of for April! I have taken advantage of this beautiful weather by waking up earlier and staying outside longer each night hello, daylight!

R and I took a lovely walk to Nugget Falls the other day. I was expecting a light hike but was unaware that what used to be a pretty nonexistent "trail" that lots of uneven ground and required sliding down a rocky hillside and jumping through streams has been made accessible to everyone (now a ridiculously easy lovely walk). I'm glad to see the area is accessible to all, but I wanted the adventure I remembered from childhood. I suppose I've got all summer to gear up for the West/East Glacier trails!

Please forgive the "durr" face. Boyfriend ALWAYS makes faces when we take photos together. I figured I would finally make a face too, because it never fails I am the only one smiling sweetly. Until we took this photo. Thanks a lot, R!
Part of the Mendenhall Glacier. And the lake (after taking this photo I accidentally threw my iPhone into the lake. Oops).

1st World Problem

Today sucked because everything I involved myself with went to shit.

Worst of the day? I dropped my i4 in a puddle. Uggh.

New to ME

I have a habit of hiding in my hermit hole (when it comes to music/movies/books). I don't have cable television and I rarely use the internet for much besides work, school and limited leisure time. This results in me totally falling behind on "new" anything... I usually discover a song that has in fact been out in the world for weeks, or usually months.

I'm sure none of this is new to anyone but me, but that's ok. Perhaps one of you (readers of this blog - I have those, right?) will find some enjoyment and discover something new!

Here is some music I've discovered in the past couple of months. Love all of these musicians. Their voices/style are just so great. Hope you like!

I'm really loving Kimbra's voice, but honestly I don't like her music much. Bad combination.
This mashup-cover she does is so great :)

Lindsey Stirling is pretty cool. Kinda quirky and a little annoying at times, but man can she play that violin!

Honestly, this discovery blew my mind... it's Kristy Thomas... from the Babysitter's Club movie! Granted this is just a still of her, if you look around at any other videos on YouTube you will see that it really is her singing :)

FOCUS!

I have just diagnosed myself with "To Do List ADD".

The last couple of months I have been driving myself crazy trying to stay on top of my "To-Do" list(s).

I have been so busy that I don't think I ever really accomplish much. Realistically I just end up re-arranging the list and then add 3 new items for every 1 I remove. Oy!

I take that back
To be fair to myself (my over-achieving-OCD-perfectionist self), I have to admit that I am getting lots done. Lots I just don't feel like I am, because as I mentioned before my never-ending list just... well... it never ends.

Work has been keeping me busier than ever. I've been putting in at least an extra 1-1.5 hours a day and still have stacks of paperwork all around me. I can attribute this to having not figured out how to say "I'm sorry, I can't help you with that right now."

Home life has been providing me the usual ebb and flow of chores, cooking, purging, organizing, pet training etc.

Braeden. My dear boy. He sure has given me a run for my money these past few months. Where did I put my parenting manual??

School provides me an opportunity to exercise my brain (which I'm really enjoying), and a chance to really exercise my over-achieving/OCD tendencies. I scored an A on my first Psych exam... yet I was tempted battling an insane urge to take the 1.5 hour exam again just to improve my A. Yah, I'm that kind of crazy.

Add in my "extra curricular" activities; house cleaning jobs, babysitting, hosting/attending functions, kid birthday parties, planning a vacation, and crafting.

I want a clone of me. Serious.

I've got lots of projects and interesting entries on my "To-Do" list, so keep an eye out for some neat blog posts... I'll get to them. Eventually.

Jewels of the Interweb

Where in the world?

I've never been a big fan of Beyonce, but every once in a while she comes out with a song or a video that I just can't get enough of...

A photo lasts forever ;)

Dukan update

10 lb weight loss.

Fell off the wagon for about a week,  haven't gained back a single lb (and so desperately ready to get back "on" the wagon)!

Meat for days is thawing in the fridge and I will do another couple of cooking days this week (where I prepare appropriate food choices, pre package and then store in the fridge).

Here's to more weight loss!

I'm back to exercising too... had to take a break for a little while because of a very hectic schedule and a tweak in the ankle. Tonight I used the elliptical, weights, and did situp/pushups - felt SO good!

Punxsutawney Phil

"Mom, I heard that tomorrow on the news this thing will like, come out of a hole and then we'll know if it is winter again." - My 7 year old

Thank goodness B is aware of annual national events. I was clueless to tomorrow being GroundHog Day. Any predictions?

I think we're stuck in this not-so-wonderful-winterland for a while longer... why?  The 45 mph winds and sideways rain tipped me off...

On a side note - all the talk about GroundHog Day this evening gave me a brilliant idea... "Bill Murray movie night" is a must. Sometime very soon!

Book list

I have a small collection of books that I'm proud of and enjoy reading, but there are so many more I would love to read/own.
The stack on my nightstand keeps growing, and I keep finding even more to add to it!

The Joy luck club
Riding in cars with boys
Animal Farm
The Hunger games (finished with 1, currently reading #2)
Little Earthquakes (a favorite of mine, read it about 5 years ago and want to read it again)

My friend K has this book blog, I've found lots of books I'd love to read! Check it out

What are some of your 'book list' books? Any favorites? Suggestions are always welcome!

Over it!

Facebook has been overtaken by football related posts for weeks now... I'm so over it!
I do not watch football, play football, like football or even CARE about football. Not one ounce!

I cannot wait until the Super Bowl happens and then we move on with our lives :)

2011: Out with a thud

For those that know me well - heck, those that know me a little - it's no secret that I am a klutz... accident prone... a walking disaster.

The past few months I have been relatively accident free, but I had a sneaking suspicion 2011 wouldn't let go without a final huzzah (or 2)!

My knee and ankle have been relatively non-problematic for a short while, I consider that a blessing after what I've been through.

Guess its time for other body parts to join in the fun, eh?

A few days ago I was making a cup of tea, and instead of pouring the boiling water into my cup I dumped it all over my fingers. I took all the necessary steps to prevent a bad scald (cold water, ice wrap, Ibuprofen) and then checked in with my mom, who is a nurse. Luckily the pain and swelling went away in a few hours.

The real treat was yesterday afternoon.
I had just finished unpacking the truck from our Costco run. I went outside for one last trip to get the alcohol (NYE party and our stock for the upcoming vacation to Wrangell. I refuse to pay sky high prices for a good drink, so I'll make my own!) and while rounding the vehicle I slipped on the snow-packed driveway sheer ice and biffed. Hard.

My reaction time has improved greatly after many falls so I was up again within seconds. No immediate pain or injury, so I gathered the bottles and very, very carefully made it inside.

Fast forward to last night before bed/this morning. OUCH! My body is definitely feeling 2011's last assault.

I've got a goose-egg/bruise the size of a tangerine on my forearm (I'm guessing this is from smacking it against the truck's flatbed/steel bumper on the way down).
My right hip/bum is extremely sore.
My left knee, yes, the knee that I have banished from ever getting injured again has seen better days... but so far I don't think I've done any major damage.

Recommended treatment? I'm tucked in bed with my Kindle (Hunger Games), have a kitty to snuggle with AND a cup of tea (sans finger scalds!).

Take that 2011!

Good intentions

Last night I finally found the time to write! I've got a few entries in the works, so be on the lookout!

This morning I got breakfast ready - Fage 0% with 2 TB of oat bran mixed in, all my vitamins/allergy meds and a 5-hour energy - set up the laptop with intentions to finish up my drafts...

Then this happened:

Can't write with a cuddly kitty on my lap! This cat still has a serious "I'm an asshole" complex, so gotta enjoy the sweet side when it shows! Guess the blogging will have to wait.

P.S. Why can't he sleep all the time? He's so sweet when he sleeps! Ha!

Dukan Update

Ryan and I are 7 days into the Dukan Diet and so far this is what we've noticed:

Stinky breath, increased thirst, a little fatigue and... WEIGHT LOSS! Ketosis (the symptoms I described) is a good thing, it means the diet is working.

I have lost almost 5 lbs in the first week and Ryan is just about the same. Our pants are fitting better and we've got the inspiration to keep it up!

I am pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to cut out bread/sugar/junk for a whole week (minus the Christmas Day food/dinner).

This next week will be our first of lean protein plus protein rich vegetables (Asparagus, broccoli, cucumbers, celery, mushrooms and a few others). I can't wait to eat vegetables again. Nom nom!

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

In my efforts to live a healthier, happier and skinnier life I have decided to share my experience on this blog, in sharing my weight loss journey, I hope it will provide an informative and inspirational account. Feel free to ask questions!

I grew up stick thin (Age 13: 5'8" and 110 lbs thin). I endured teasing and questions about if I had an eating disorder all through middle school.
High school rolled around and I practiced my independence (poor food choices), experimented with friends (hello munchies) and my depression hit me full swing. I didn't exercise hardly at all (huge boobs, reduction at 16 and poor body image = lack of interest to work out.).
At 19 I became pregnant and put on even more weight. After having my son, I was the heaviest I had ever been in my life. I knew this is not how I wanted to live, but I wasn't sure how to change.

I have tried a few weight loss programs:

Age 20; Optifast:
When B was 7 months old, and I was the heaviest I'd EVER been I researched and joined a Doc's office in town for the Optifast weight loss program. Out of desperation to lose weight, I chose a program that was totally unsuitable for my eating habits and comfort level. Won't be doing that again.
For me I really feel this was the worst program ever.
It was hella expensive, the "food" (boxed nutritional drinks, like slimfast) were disgusting and the rapid weight loss (30 lbs in almost 2 months) paired with being obese/having recently been pregnant caused my body to have gallstones... which led to quitting the program out of medical necessity and then needing Gallbladder removal surgery. Yikes!
The only helpful part of this program was having a medical team (doctor, nurse and nutritionist) to consult weekly, a supportive group (about 8-10 women & men) and education about nutrition, portion size and exercise at each weekly gathering.

Age 24; The Belly Fat Diet:
I heard about this through a friend. Her husband went on the diet and lost 17 lbs in a few short months, without much effort. After some coaxing, Ryan agreed to try it with me.
Basically, the diet's purpose was to cut out all carbs/sugar/packaged crap and live off of only whole grains, proteins and lower fat options aka EATING HEALTHY! DUH!
The recipes were easy to make and tasted fine (they also were surprisingly filling!) but it was a pain to need to replace all of my pantry. I live in a small town and didn't have half of the suggested food products/brands available to me. It was a stress to grocery shop attempting to substitute most ingredients (and still stay on program).
Ryan lost almost 15 lbs and I lost about 8 in the few months we adopted the Belly Fat lifestyle.
Ryan still raves about how great (energized, satisfied with smaller servings and didn't crave junk food) he felt following this lifestyle change... I didn't get those results.
I was hungry a lot, as I mentioned before the frustration in trying to find brands/products to use was annoying, and I didn't see much weight loss.

Perks to this program? No frankenfood! All the food you eat is basically organic/whole/healthy. It felt good to know I could feed my whole family (and even a few brave friends) my altered recipes and it was all natural foods.

Age 26; Weight Watchers:
I don't think I have to explain much about WeightWatchers. I know lots of friends/family who have followed this eating program and have seen wonderful results.
My Poppa offered to pay my membership fees, as long as he was seeing some results. I was so motivated to lose the weight (this took place right after my Nana had died, from health complications due to years of Diabetes) because I didn't want to end up with Diabetes (I still don't!). I wanted to make myself and my Poppa proud by finally taking off the weight I'd gained the past 6 years.
I joined the online program (you can go to meetings if you want, but it's not required). I loved it!
It was so simple to use their website, browse through their recipe archives (lots of yummy ones!) and to track my daily intake on my profile/iPhone.
I tried this for 3 months, to the letter. And guess what? I lost the first week (about 4 lbs) and then gained. Yes, that's right. I gained weight for the next 11 weeks. 14 lbs total.
Besides feeling like a total failure, I just couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. WHY wasn't I losing weight, when I was striving so hard to adhere to the program? I'd seen people around me lose lots of weight and keep it off.
Out of sheer frustration and wanting to save my Poppa money, I stopped the program after 3 months.

Perks? The ease of logging your day (the website helps keep you on track for daily intake/exercise/water etc) was great. I loved that aspect of the program.
The recipes tasted great (again, my friends/fam braved the lifestyle change with me) and we were eating real food.

Since May of 2011, I have been introducing actual exercise (see this for some background info) back into my routine! The Elliptical at home, walks a couple days a week and LOTS of house cleaning (clients, family and my own) has helped me maintain my current weight. I fluctuate by a few lbs every few weeks, but I am not seeing anything major.

A coworker and I have been talking about The Dukan Diet for a couple of months. There is a teacher at one of my schools who has lost 57 lbs in less than 7 months following Dukan. My coworker started the diet, and within the first week lost 7 lbs (then, had a death in the family and had to travel for 2 weeks and went off program).
I researched the program online, ordered the book (which is a combo of the diet book and all his recipes) from Amazon, and after a 4 week wait it finally arrived!

Ryan and I started the diet yesterday (Tues the 20th), my philosophy is it never hurts to try a life style that has worked so well for someone you know. Look for a follow up post in 7 days.

Here goes nothin!

Not the only one!

A friend posted on Facebook the other day about how emotional she had been lately.
The everyday beauty in the world, or the sadness in a child's eyes, or even the sweet lyric in a pop love song was sending her into tears... I thought I was the only one who had days like this??

I suppose I've heard from family and friends that I sometimes have a flare for the dramatic - as if! - so I'm glad someone else can relate.
I often find myself misty-eyed just because I daydream of a sweet moment, or have let my mind wander to the future and get swept up in an awesome fantasy about what the world has to offer. I'll find myself with tear filled eyes, lip trembling, heart moved. Oy!

Yesterday was one of those days.

I was at work (on a weekend? Yes. Le Suck!) and had just finished a craft project (Christmas gift for Heather!) that I had put a lot of time and energy into, so I was already feeling a tad sentimental and weepy when my sister sent me a text. She had come across this poem earlier in the day and knew she just had to share it with me (I love how well she knows me).

I Love You

I am your parent, you are my child
I am your quiet place, you are my wild

I am your calm face, you are my giggle
I am your want, you are my wiggle

I am your dinner, you are my chocolate cake
I am your bedtime, you are my wide awake

I am your lullaby, you are my peekaboo
I am your goodnight kiss, you are my I LOVE YOU

- Anonymous

I shed a few tears each time I read this. I hope those of you that have children enjoy it as much as I do.

I have an intense love for my child, and although times as a parent are more often than not extremely difficult for me (I'm debating divulging more personal details about my life/child on this blog) I love my son and being a mom more than anything in the world. I wouldn't trade for anything!

If you are a parent, and you are not tearing up after reading that poem... you suck the big one. Plain and simple.
